Tips for more PC protection.

  • Install a firewall to prevent viruses and worms getting through to your computer. A firewall will help to block unauthorized access to and from your computer or network through your computer's ports. McAfee Virus Scan Plus delivers an integrated firewall that works with the antivirus and antispyware technology to combat today's sophisticated multi-pronged attacks.
  • Make sure that you are using a legally licensed operating system.
  • Keep your operating system security up to date by regularly downloading security updates and patches. If you use a Windows operating system, enable the automatic windows updates or download Microsoft updates regularly.
  • Be extremely careful when using third party computers.
  • Disable file sharing on your computer. File sharing is a feature of Microsoft Windows that allows other computers to access your personal computer via the internet. We recommend that you disable file sharing; however, if you choose to keep this option, be sure to apply appropriate security measures.
  • Back up your files on a regular basis and store the backups separately from your computer. These backups can be copied to some type of removable media such as a CD, DVD or external hard drive. If a virus attacks your computer, you can limit the data loss of your important files and documents.
